We focus our work in three key areas, because nurturing the potential of kids, helping people live healthier, and supporting our neighbors are fundamental to strengthening communities.
LIVESTRONG® at the Y is a 12-week small group program designed for cancer survivors who have recently become de-conditioned or chronically fatigued from their treatment and/or disease. Our goal is to help survivors build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve functional ability. Additional goals include reducing the severity of therapy side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes, improving energy levels and self-esteem. A final goal of the program is to assist participants in developing their own physical fitness program so they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle as a way of life.
PROGRAM GOAL: To empower cancer survivors to improve functional capacity and to increase their quality of life through an organized program of fitness and strength.
INSTRUCTORS: Nationally certified fitness instructors participate in a Stanford University and the YMCA of the USA Training. The instructors give individualized instruction and support to the participants.
LIVESTRONG® founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong and based in Austin, Texas, LIVESTRONG® fights for the 28 million people around the world living with cancer today. LIVESTRONG® connects individuals to the support they need, leverages funding and resources to spur innovation and engages communities and leaders to drive social change. Known for the iconic yellow wristband, LIVESTRONG’s® mission is to inspire and empower anyone affected by cancer.
The Y offers a wide variety of programs in addition to Cancer Survivorship Programs to support those seeking to live a healthy and full-filling life.
“Patients who add exercise to their lifestyle after diagnosis cut their chances for recurrence and death in half.”
