Working at summer camp is one of the most rewarding positions you will ever hold! Camp Nan A Bo Sho focuses on giving children a chance to explore and discover more about themselves in an environment that provides friendship and support. The camp staff plays a huge role in developing our campers into strong and confident individuals. If you have an interest in working with children and love being outdoors, we have a job for you!

Who We Hire

Each year about 35 young people from around the country and the world join us for an unforgettable summer working at Camp Nan A Bo Sho. Our camp family is made up of people from different ethnicities/races, faiths, genders, gender identities, sexual orientations, socio-economic backgrounds and life experiences. We are truly an inclusive and strong family unit where everyone is challenged to bring their best selves.

Our seasonal staff members must be a minimum of 18 years old, a high school graduate and have the following qualities*:

  • A strong interest in working with youth and a desire to be a positive role model in their lives.
  • Enjoy working in the outdoors.
  • Able to work together with a team towards a common goal.
  • Relate to diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Open to new experiences and willing to work long, hard hours for fulfilling personal growth.
  • Live by the four core values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.

*Junior Counselors must be a minimum of 17 years old and have completed either the LIT or CIT program at Camp Nan A Bo Sho.

Training

All seasonal staff will go through a series of trainings that will help prepare them for the job ahead. Training sessions include behavior management, teambuilding, technical skills, child abuse prevention and more. All staff will be trained in outdoor skills that are needed to take campers off site on overnights and wilderness trips.

All staff 18 and older are required to maintain a current certification in CPR and First Aid. Staff can choose to acquire that certification before arrival at camp or attend the training during the camp pre-season trainings. Lifeguard training and certification is also a plus for all staff and is offered free of charge during the pre-season trainings.

American Red Cross classes offered:

  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • First Aid
  • Lifeguarding
  • Wilderness First Aid

Housing and Meals

While working at Camp Nan A Bo Sho, your housing and meals are included as a benefit of working at camp. Most meals are served cafeteria-style in Orbison Lodge. We serve three full meals per day and can accommodate most dietary preferences and restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, dairy free, nut free). 

Counselors, Junior Counselors and Wilderness Trip Leaders will live in cabins alongside our campers, assuring camper supervision and group management. Each cabin sleeps up to 8 staff and 24 campers and features electricity. Most cabins also have air conditioning, with bathrooms nearby in a shared central shower house. You may move cabins each week depending on the group you are assigned to work with.

Leadership Staff/Directors will live in smaller staff cabins that sleep up to 4 people. These cabins have electricity with bathrooms and showers located in a central shared shower house.

Time Off

All staff are given two hours off each day and a minimum of 12 hours off each week. Time off schedules vary by week. Camp sessions run Sunday afternoon to Friday afternoon with staff having off most weekends except one during our Family Weekend program.

Staff are encouraged to venture off camp property on their personal time to explore the local communities, attend a local event or grab a bite to eat. Transportation can be arranged for those who need it. We also have indoor spaces around camp, including a staff lounge, where you can relax without leaving camp property.

Internships

Many of the jobs we offer may fulfill internship requirements for certain degree programs at colleges and universities. We are happy to work with you and your academic institution to complete all necessary paperwork if your camp position meets the requirements of your internship experience. Please contact us before summer begins to confirm.

Volunteer Opportunities

Calling all Camp Nan A Bo Sho alumni! Are you looking to give back to camp or want to work at camp again but can’t commit to an entire summer? Camp Nan A Bo Sho is always looking for volunteers to share their expertise with our campers and staff. Volunteers can set a schedule that works for you!

All volunteers do need to complete a basic application and submit to a background check prior to arrival at camp. Contact camp before the summer to ensure your paperwork is processed in time for a successful volunteer experience.
